The expansive spa is designed to look like an African village, with thatched huts surrounded by densely planted gardens dotted with water features, and it’s a delightful retreat. Run by local spa brand Seven Colours, it has a strong focus on wellness with a Mauritian flavour. There are 20 treatment rooms – including seven in the garden – where guests can unwind with a signature ritual or blissful massage, or there are the watery pleasures of Vichy showers, steam baths, hammams, a sauna with an icy plunge pool and more to enjoy.

You can book private yoga (hatha and ashtanga) and anti-stress sessions at the spa, which also has a pavilion for group yoga, tai-chi, qi gong and meditation classes. Beach yoga is also an option.

There is a fully equipped fitness centre with one section for cardio machines and a separate weights area, open from 7am to 8pm.

The 5 Star PADI diving centre operated by Mauritius Dive Adventures offers courses for beginners along with excursions to some of the island’s best-known dive sites.

The Cabana nautical centre provides a wide range of activities, including complimentary windsurfing, dinghy sailing, canoeing, pedal boating, snorkelling trips and waterskiing (1 session a day). For a supplement, you can also go kitesurfing.

To reduce food miles, many of the fruit and vegetables used in the restaurants are grown on the estate. The gardens are planted with indigenous plants that are adapted to the climate, and only organic and natural products are used to look after them. Thanks to an on-site bottling plant, drinking water comes in reusable glass bottles rather than single-use plastic. Looking after the health of the lagoon is a priority, with a variety of projects ranging from working with Reef Conservation to install artificial reefs to creating a guide for guests to the marine life in it.

Family experiences in the neighbouring nature reserve include picnics under the tree canopy and wildlife trails with a local expert*. Alternatively, head for the UNESCO-protected Biosphere Bel Ombre and explore in a guide-driven 4x4*.

For large families, the Heritage Villa is a real African sanctuary, with a living room, private pool and tucked-away location.

Children between the ages of 2 and 11 are made very welcome at the Timomo & Friends children’s club. The club is open each day from 8:30am to 11:30pm and youngsters can join in the various activities which include fishing for crabs, dressing up, arts and crafts and playing in the swimming pool. There is also a free baby Timomo club for children from birth to 3 years old, a unique offering on the island.

Teenagers can partake in a number of fun activities and excursions including horseriding, pitch and putt golf and mountain bike rides.
